Four students from St Peter’s Naalya Secondary School sustained injuries on Sunday morning after the school coaster they were travelling in was involved in a three-vehicle collision along the Kampala–Gulu Highway in Nakasongola District.

The accident occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. at Kakindu Village in Wabinyonyi Sub-county.

According to Savannah Regional Police spokesperson SP Sam Twiineamazima, the school coaster, registration number UBQ 073H, was travelling from the Gulu direction when its driver attempted to overtake a trailer. During the manoeuvre, the vehicle reportedly entered the opposite lane and collided head-on with an oncoming fuel tanker. A Toyota Hiace ambulance that was travelling behind the coaster was also caught up in the collision.

The injured students have been identified as Christabella Awori, Claudia Namukisa, Margaret Atwine, and Prudence Tumugabirwe. Emergency responders and police officers from Nakasongola quickly arrived at the scene before transferring the students to medical facilities in Kampala for treatment.

SP Twiineamazima urged motorists to observe traffic regulations, especially when overtaking on major highways.

“Drivers should always exercise caution before overtaking, obey speed limits, and follow road signs to help prevent such accidents,” he said.

Following the crash, the damaged school coaster and the Toyota Hiace ambulance, registration number UBK 257F, were towed to Katuugo Police Station for further inspection. The fuel tanker, bearing registration number UBQ 935Y, remained at the scene until its cargo could be safely offloaded before recovery.

Police say initial findings indicate that careless overtaking may have caused the accident. Investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
