The territorial police in Lira-City West Division received a report of a suicide by hanging on August 11, 2025.

The incident occurred in Ober Kampala, Lira-City West Division, after a report was made by Omara Tony, a 30-year-old medical professional and resident of the area.

According to North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson, Patrick Jimmy Okema, it is alleged that on August 11, 2025, at around 7:00 AM, police received information from Omara Tony that an individual identified as Okello Boniface had died by suicide.

Okello, a student at Lira University and a local referee, was a resident of Ober Kampala in Lira-City West Division.

An incident report was filed, and a team from the scene of the crime, led by the District Police Commander (DPC) and Officer in Charge of Criminal Investigations Department (OC CID) for Lira City West, documented the scene and recorded relevant statements.

The body was then transported to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Preliminary Findings

The police investigation found the following at the scene:

  • The body was found hanging from a tree, with the legs suspended approximately three meters from the ground.
  • A V-shaped mark was observed on the deceased’s neck, and the head was twisted to the left.
  • The tongue was protruding, and feces were found in the deceased’s trousers.
  • The deceased was wearing a blue pair of trousers with a brown belt and a green-striped t-shirt.
  • A pair of sandals was found on the ground beneath the tree.
  • Bruises were noted on the deceased’s left cheek.
  • The body was described as “well-nourished.”
  • The body was hanging approximately seven meters from the tree trunk.
  • The scene was located approximately three meters from the deceased’s home.
  • The hands were hanging freely, with no signs of restraint.

The police spokesperson noted that these signs are consistent with a suicide. He concluded by saying that this is a very unfortunate incident and encouraged people to share their problems with friends, family, religious leaders, and cultural leaders to find support and resolution.
