A police officer has died after a speeding vehicle rammed into a security checkpoint in Katakwi District on Sunday night. The crash happened at around 8:30pm at Getom checkpoint. The deceased has been identified as 24-year-old Police Constable Enock Kilobi. According to Mike Longole, spokesperson for the Police Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), a Toyota Mark X, registration number UBR 151S, was travelling from the Soroti direction when the driver reportedly lost control. The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has introduced a WhatsApp service to help Ugandans check the status of their National ID applications and know where to pick up their cards. According to NIRA, out of more than 7 million new printed National ID cards in Uganda, only 1.5 million have so far been picked up by applicants, leaving over 5.5 million cards still pending collection in district offices. “While we continue printing and dispatching cards, we encourage applicants to visit respective district offices to pick their cards,” the statement reads.
