A 25-year-old man has reportedly been arrested in Kibera, Nairobi, after allegedly being found selling what police suspect to be human flesh to unsuspecting residents as beef.
The suspect, who is said to be from the Gusii community, was reportedly taken into custody by officers from Kibera Police Station following a tip-off from residents who had become suspicious of his meat-selling activities.
According to reports circulating about the incident, investigations allegedly revealed that the meat being sold was not from an animal but was believed to be human flesh from a woman whose body had reportedly been killed and dismembered.
The disturbing claims have caused shock among residents in Kibera, one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements, where the suspect was allegedly operating among other traders.
Some residents who reportedly bought meat from the man were said to have been horrified after learning of the allegations. Reports further claim that he may have been selling the meat for several days before his arrest, raising questions about how long the alleged operation had been taking place and whether other people may have unknowingly consumed it.
Authorities have reportedly opened a homicide investigation to establish the identity of the woman whose remains are allegedly involved in the case and determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
Detectives are also expected to investigate whether the suspect acted alone or had assistance from other individuals.
Investigators will further seek to establish where the alleged human remains came from and whether the woman was killed specifically for the alleged sale of her flesh or whether her body was obtained after her death through another means.
The suspect’s identity has not been publicly disclosed, and he remains in police custody as investigations continue. If formally charged, he could face serious offences depending on the evidence gathered by investigators.
A local police commander reportedly confirmed the arrest and appealed to anyone who may have purchased meat from the suspect to contact investigators and provide information that could help establish what happened.
Authorities have also urged residents to remain calm while investigations are conducted.
The disturbing allegations have generated outrage and concern in Nairobi, with calls for stronger security and surveillance measures in informal settlements.
However, the claims surrounding the alleged sale of human flesh have not been independently established, and the investigation is expected to determine the facts of the case.
