Ruparelia Group’s Next Generation Emerges as Sheena, Meera Take Bigger Roles

The next generation of the Ruparelia family is becoming increasingly visible in the family’s business affairs, with sisters Sheena and Meera Ruparelia taking on greater responsibilities within one of Uganda’s leading family-owned business groups.

Their expanding roles come as the Ruparelia Group enters an important stage in its generational transition. The diversified business empire was founded and built by businessman Dr Sudhir Ruparelia and has interests in real estate, education, hospitality, insurance, finance and several other sectors.

According to a profile published by CEO East Africa, Dr Sudhir has confirmed Sheena’s increasing involvement in the succession of the family business, while Meera has also become more actively engaged in the group’s operations.

The development provides an insight into how one of Uganda’s prominent family businesses is preparing for the next generation while its founder continues to play an active role in the organisation.

Over the years, the Ruparelia Group has developed a wide-ranging portfolio spanning multiple industries. The group’s businesses are estimated to have a combined value of about US$1.3 billion and employ more than 10,000 people, according to the profile.

Sheena’s entry into the family business has been shaped by both academic training and professional experience outside the family enterprise.

She studied Economics and Accounting at City, University of London, before returning to Uganda, where she gained experience in the business sector. She previously worked in business development at Crane Bank, giving her professional exposure to financial services before taking on responsibilities within the family business.

Her role has since grown to include involvement in Meera Investments, along with the group’s property and hospitality businesses.

Meera has likewise taken on a more prominent role in the family’s business activities, highlighting the increasing participation of the second generation in the group.

Their growing involvement comes at a time when succession planning is becoming an increasingly important consideration for major family-owned businesses across Africa. For enterprises built over many years by their founders, successfully transferring responsibility to the next generation can influence their ability to preserve their value, expand and remain unified.

For the Ruparelia family, the transition is particularly significant given the scale and diversity of the group’s investments.

The group’s portfolio includes major property developments, hotels, schools, financial services businesses and other enterprises, giving it a substantial presence across Uganda and beyond.

Against this backdrop, the increasing responsibilities of Sheena and Meera represent more than the involvement of the founder’s daughters in the family enterprise. Their roles point towards an emerging succession structure in which the second generation is gaining experience while taking responsibility for important areas of the family’s investment portfolio.

Although Dr Sudhir remains central to the group’s affairs, the growing visibility of his daughters offers an indication of how leadership within the family business could develop in the years ahead.

For Sheena and Meera, the challenge will be to build on the enterprise established by their father while managing the complexities of a diversified business portfolio in an evolving economy.

Their growing presence marks the beginning of another chapter for the Ruparelia Group, as the family’s second generation increasingly prepares to carry forward a business legacy built over several decades.
