Uganda’s luxury tourism industry is preparing to welcome a new destination as Paradise Island Resort, a private island development backed by businessman Dr Sudhir Ruparelia, prepares to open its doors to guests on December 1.
Located on a 19-acre island on Lake Victoria, the resort is designed to offer visitors a secluded holiday experience while expanding the range of high-end accommodation available in the country.
Dr Ruparelia, chairman of the Ruparelia Group, says the development represents another step in strengthening Uganda’s hospitality industry and attracting international visitors.
He has described the project as a new chapter in the country’s luxury tourism offering, noting that the group is looking forward to welcoming guests from Uganda and abroad.
The island is approximately 20 minutes away from Speke Resort Munyonyo by speedboat, making it accessible while maintaining the privacy and exclusivity associated with island accommodation.
A different kind of lakeside experience
Paradise Island Resort features 38 accommodation units designed to cater to different categories of visitors.
The facilities include 10 standard cottages, 11 cliff-hanger cottages overlooking Lake Victoria, 14 deluxe cottages with two bedrooms each and three executive villas.
The development also incorporates solar power, reflecting an approach that combines luxury accommodation with renewable energy.
Images released to promote the property show cottages with thatched roofs and expansive glass fronts facing the lake. The interiors feature contemporary designs, while outdoor terraces and relaxation spaces provide guests with opportunities to enjoy the surrounding natural environment.
Unlike conventional hotels located within busy urban centres, the resort’s island setting offers a more private environment for visitors seeking relaxation away from the city.
Beyond leisure: Corporate retreats and private events
Although the resort is expected to attract holidaymakers, couples and families, its business model also extends to the corporate and events market.
The facility is targeting organisations looking for venues for conferences, meetings and corporate retreats. It will also cater to weddings and private functions, creating opportunities to serve different segments of Uganda’s hospitality industry.
This combination of leisure and business tourism could help the resort attract visitors throughout the year rather than depending exclusively on holiday travel.
A project several years in the making
Construction of Paradise Island Resort began on May 1, 2021, under the direction of Sheena Ruparelia, Dr Sudhir Ruparelia’s daughter and a director at the resort.
The development took several years to reach its planned opening, with the launch date postponed on multiple occasions before December 1 was confirmed.
The resort will operate under the Speke Group of Hotels, the hospitality division associated with the Ruparelia Group. Its existing properties include Speke Resort Munyonyo and Kabira Country Club.
Adding a private island destination gives the hotel group a different offering from its established city and lakeside properties, broadening the experiences available to its customers.
Strengthening Uganda’s luxury tourism offering
The opening comes as Uganda continues to position itself as an attractive destination for international tourists, with investments in accommodation, leisure facilities and distinctive visitor experiences playing an important role in the sector’s development.
Private island resorts offer a specialised tourism product that can appeal to travellers seeking exclusivity, scenic surroundings and personalised hospitality.
For the Ruparelia Group, Paradise Island Resort represents an expansion of its interests in Uganda’s hospitality market and another addition to a business portfolio that also includes real estate, education and other investments.
Beyond its direct contribution to the hotel industry, the project could generate opportunities for businesses involved in boat transportation, food supplies, maintenance, tourism services and other supporting activities.
As the December 1 opening approaches, Paradise Island Resort is positioning itself as a new option for visitors looking to experience Lake Victoria from a private island setting, while adding another high-end destination to Uganda’s growing tourism landscape.
