Pastor Eaten by Lions After He Invaded their Den by Faith (Photo)

One of Nigeria’s most talked-about and tragic incidents involving religious faith unfolded in 1991 when a pastor reportedly entered a lion enclosure at the University of Ibadan Zoological Garden, believing God would protect him just as the biblical prophet Daniel was protected in the lions’ den.

The incident, which has remained part of Nigerian folklore for decades, shocked the nation and sparked widespread debate about the boundaries between faith, personal conviction and common sense.

A Mission Inspired by the Bible

According to numerous accounts, the preacher, widely identified as Pastor (or Bishop) Daniel Abodunrin, arrived at the University of Ibadan Zoo during the Easter season carrying a large Bible and wearing a flowing red robe.

Witnesses said his intention was not simply to visit the zoo. Instead, he reportedly believed he had been divinely inspired to recreate the biblical account recorded in the Book of Daniel, where God shut the mouths of lions and spared His faithful servant.

As families and tourists enjoyed the holiday at one of Nigeria’s oldest zoological gardens, the pastor made his way toward the lion enclosure despite warnings from zoo staff and onlookers.

Witnesses Tried to Stop Him

Reports differ on exactly how he entered the enclosure. Some accounts claim he slipped past security unnoticed, while others say he persuaded a keeper to let him through.

What remains consistent across eyewitness reports is that several people pleaded with him not to proceed.

Ignoring the warnings, the pastor reportedly continued praying aloud, quoting Scripture and declaring that the same God who delivered Daniel thousands of years earlier would protect him.

Initially, the lions appeared to retreat toward one side of the enclosure, leading some spectators to believe nothing would happen.

The Attack

Moments later, the situation changed dramatically.

As the pastor moved closer to the animals, one or more of the lions suddenly charged. Witnesses described scenes of panic as horrified visitors watched helplessly from outside the enclosure.

The attack proved fatal within moments. Zoo officials later recovered what remained of the pastor’s body after the animals were restrained.

The tragedy instantly became national news, with newspapers across Nigeria reporting on the shocking incident.

Public Reaction

The incident triggered intense public discussion.

Many people viewed the tragedy as a cautionary tale about confusing religious belief with dangerous actions, while others insisted the pastor had acted out of sincere faith.

Some supporters reportedly demanded that the lions be put down, arguing they had attacked a man of God. Others defended the animals, noting that they had merely behaved according to their natural instincts.

The debate continued long after the incident, becoming one of Nigeria’s most frequently referenced stories whenever discussions arise about extreme demonstrations of faith.

A Story That Still Sparks Debate

More than three decades later, the incident continues to be cited in conversations about religion, risk and personal responsibility.

While the biblical story of Daniel remains central to Christian teaching, many religious leaders have emphasized that believers should not deliberately place themselves in life-threatening situations in an attempt to test God’s protection.

The University of Ibadan Zoo remains one of Nigeria’s best-known zoological gardens, and the story of Pastor Daniel Abodunrin has become one of its most enduring and tragic historical accounts.

Editor’s Note: Some details surrounding the incident vary across historical reports and eyewitness recollections. While it is widely accepted that the pastor entered the lion enclosure and was fatally attacked, certain aspects of how he gained access and his exact statements beforehand have never been conclusively verified.
