Ugandan billionaire and entrepreneur Sudhir Ruparelia has stated that his main motivation for continuing to invest is not to build personal wealth but to create jobs for Ugandans.
During an interview on RadioWalla, he explained that job creation has always been the focus of his business strategy. This remains true even after establishing one of the largest private business empires in the country.
When asked why he keeps expanding his investments despite his financial success, Sudhir emphasized that generating jobs is his biggest goal.
“My main motive is to create jobs. Society out there needs jobs,” he said.
His comments received applause from the audience, many of whom saw this statement as proof of the important role private investors play in driving economic growth and improving lives.
According to Sudhir, the true value of a business should be viewed not just in profits but also in the number of people helped by the jobs and opportunities it creates. He noted that major investments often lead to both direct and indirect jobs across various sectors.
During the interview, he also reflected on key decisions that shaped his journey, particularly his early investments in land in Munyonyo.
He remembered buying property in that area when few recognized its potential. Many, including family members, questioned his choice, believing he was taking a big financial risk.
Sudhir shared a humorous memory of his young son, who was then just five years old, jokingly worrying that the family was spending too much money on land.
Years later, that investment became very successful as Munyonyo turned into one of Kampala’s most prestigious locations.
Today, the area hosts several landmark developments tied to the Ruparelia Group, including Speke Resort Munyonyo, Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort, and the Speke Resort Convention Centre. These investments have helped make Munyonyo a top destination for tourism, conferences, business events, and hospitality.
Sudhir mentioned that successful investing often takes patience, insight, and the ability to spot opportunities before they are obvious to others.
His remarks offered insight into the philosophy that has fueled the growth of the Ruparelia Group, now one of East Africa’s largest privately owned conglomerates.
While financial success is a result of business, Sudhir believes the greatest reward comes from seeing investments create jobs, strengthen communities, and support the country’s economic development.
