David Kabanda Reveals Untold Story Behind Rajiv Ruparelia’s Support for Muhoozi Celebration

Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Secretary General and Kasambya County Member of Parliament David Kabanda, popularly known as “Omutume Kabanda,” has revealed fresh details about the role played by the late businessman Rajiv Ruparelia in the organization of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s 2019 birthday celebrations.

During an exclusive interview with Joseph Kisitu on Baba TV’s political talk show Direct Shot, Kabanda spoke warmly about Rajiv’s contribution, describing him as one of the key figures whose support helped make the event a success. He also paid tribute to the late entrepreneur, noting that his generosity remains fondly remembered by those involved in organizing the celebrations.

According to Kabanda, Rajiv was instrumental in facilitating the event by providing a venue at Speke Resort Munyonyo and covering catering expenses for the large number of guests who attended.

“I organized Muhoozi’s birthday celebration in 2019, and I still remember everyone who contributed toward its success. Rajiv was the biggest supporter because he offered Speke Resort Munyonyo free of charge and catered for food and drinks for hundreds of guests,” Kabanda said.

He noted that while Rajiv played the leading sponsorship role, several other prominent individuals also offered financial support. Among them were Edwin Karugire, former Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka, and Vincent Bagiire, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who each reportedly contributed Shs2 million. Cabinet Minister Frank Tumwebaze is also said to have supported the event with Shs4 million, alongside other contributors.

Kabanda used the interview to reflect on Rajiv Ruparelia’s wider impact on Uganda’s business and social sectors. The son of Ruparelia Group chairman Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, Rajiv was widely recognized as one of the country’s most influential young business leaders.

Born on January 2, 1990, Rajiv pursued his education in the United Kingdom before returning home to take on leadership responsibilities within the family’s business empire. As Managing Director of the Ruparelia Group, he helped oversee growth across hospitality, real estate, education, agriculture, and leisure industries.

Away from business, Rajiv was known for supporting youth programs, sports initiatives, and community projects. Friends and associates often described him as approachable, generous, and passionate about empowering young people.

He also established a strong presence in Uganda’s motorsport scene, competing in rally events and inspiring many upcoming drivers through his involvement in the sport.

Rajiv tragically passed away on May 3, 2025, following a road accident at Busabala Junction near Munyonyo. Reports indicated that he had recently returned from London after attending wedding celebrations for a close friend, the son of former Deputy Chief Justice Richard Buteera, before the fatal crash occurred.

His passing prompted an outpouring of tributes from government leaders, business figures, religious leaders, and members of the public, many of whom remembered him as a visionary entrepreneur and dedicated philanthropist.

In recognition of his contributions, Rajiv will be honoured posthumously at the 9th PAP Global Awards. The award is scheduled to be presented by the Pan African Pyramid during a ceremony set for August 29, 2026, at Speke Resort Munyonyo a venue closely linked to many initiatives and events he supported during his lifetime.

Organisers say the recognition will celebrate his impact in philanthropy, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, and community development both within Uganda and beyond.

As more accounts emerge highlighting his role in significant national events, including Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s 2019 birthday celebrations, many believe the upcoming award will serve as a fitting tribute to a man whose influence continues to be felt across Uganda’s business and social landscape.
