Nalongo Maggie Kaweesi, the widow of late Ugandan singer Emmanuel Mayanja, better known as AK47, has passed away after reportedly battling health complications.
Kaweesi died on Monday at Mengo Hospital, where she had been admitted for treatment.
Her death was confirmed by family friend and music promoter Vegas, who revealed that she had been hospitalized for three days after falling ill shortly after returning to Uganda.
According to Vegas, Kaweesi had recently arrived back in the country when she developed complications involving her internal organs.
“It is heartbreaking news. God has called her home. She had just returned to Uganda,” Vegas said. “She travelled frequently, but after this trip she developed internal organ complications. She spent three days receiving treatment at Mengo Hospital before she passed away.”
As of the time of publication, the family had not revealed the specific cause of her illness, nor had they announced funeral or burial arrangements.
Kaweesi became widely known through her marriage to AK47, the late musician who was also the younger brother of celebrated artists Jose Chameleone, Weasel, and Pallaso. AK47 died in March 2015 after collapsing at a bar in Kampala.
The couple had twins, and following the singer’s death, Kaweesi relocated overseas with the children. She later returned to Uganda, where the twins reunited with members of the Mayanja family.
In 2021, Kaweesi returned to the spotlight after holding a traditional introduction ceremony with musician Rabadaba in Entebbe. The pair later moved to the United Kingdom, but their relationship eventually came to an end after a series of widely publicized disputes.
News of Kaweesi’s passing has sparked an outpouring of condolences from friends, fans and members of Uganda’s entertainment industry, marking yet another painful loss connected to the Mayanja family.
