Police in Kamwenge District have opened an investigation into the death of a Senior One student who was found unresponsive in a dormitory at Mpanga Senior Secondary School, a government-aided institution in Mpanga Parish, Kahunge Sub-county.
According to Rwenzori West regional police spokesperson SP Vincent Twesige, the deceased, identified as Martin Agaba from Kamwenge District, died on the morning of Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
The school’s head teacher, Ms. Asaba Kameda, informed authorities that Agaba had been diagnosed with epilepsy and was on prescribed treatment for the condition.
“On Monday evening, April 14, the student attended his prep sessions before going to bed. The next day, around 7 a.m., a fellow student tried to wake him but received no response. The dormitory master was called in and confirmed that the student had died,” said SP Twesige.
Police visited the school and transported the body to Rukunyu Government Hospital for a postmortem as preparations for burial began.
Initial findings suggest Agaba’s death may have been due to complications from epilepsy.A teacher, speaking anonymously, shared that Agaba experienced a seizure during his fine art examination on Monday. “His classmates helped him recover after the incident. He had another seizure later that evening but seemed stable enough to attend prep. Due to heavy rain that night, no one noticed when his condition worsened in his sleep. Tragically, he passed away quietly, alone in the dormitory,” the teacher explained.
The administration was alerted early the following morning, after which the police and the student’s parents were informed. According to school officials, the parents, who were aware of his condition, did not raise concerns upon arrival.“They understood the nature of his illness and the potential risks,” the teacher added.
Epilepsy is a neurological condition marked by recurring seizures—sudden, abnormal bursts of electrical activity in the brain. These seizures can vary from mild episodes to intense convulsions, affecting different parts of the body and consciousness.
