Kaliro District, Uganda – A funeral ceremony in Buyaga village turned into utter shock and confusion when a young girl—previously declared dead—walked into her own burial, alive and well.
According to eyewitnesses, the 17-year-old girl had reportedly passed away three days earlier after a brief illness. Her family, devastated by the news, had organized a burial ceremony that drew hundreds of mourners from the community.
However, just as the final funeral rites were underway, gasps filled the air when the girl appeared at the homestead, barefoot and visibly disoriented. Many mourners reportedly fled in fear, believing they were witnessing a ghost.
“I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was just about to throw soil onto the casket when someone screamed that she was standing at the gate,” said an astonished relative.
According to local authorities, the girl had been mistakenly pronounced dead at a local clinic, where she had been taken after fainting due to severe dehydration and malaria. The clinic issued a death certificate after medical staff failed to detect signs of life.
But new revelations suggest the girl may have gone into a temporary coma or deep unconscious state, and was later rescued by a Good Samaritan who found her near a trading center. She was taken to a different facility, where she regained consciousness two days later.
The family was never notified due to lack of identification documents and poor communication between the two clinics.
Kaliro District Police Commander, ASP Moses Mugoya, confirmed the bizarre incident and said investigations are ongoing to determine how such a grave medical error could occur. He added that while it was a relief that the girl survived, it exposed serious gaps in the local health system.
Community members are still grappling with what many are calling a “miracle”, while health officials are being urged to review protocols around confirming deaths to avoid similar traumatic incidents.
“It’s a blessing, but also a wake-up call,” said a local pastor. “We must value life—and be absolutely sure—before we bury our own.”
The girl is currently recovering at home under close medical supervision and is expected to speak publicly about her experience in the coming days.
This unbelievable event has left an entire village stunned — and asking the question: how many others might have been buried too soon?
