Woman Accuses Mother of Trying to Steal Her Baby in Shocking Family Dispute

A troubling family conflict in Mukono has resulted in a woman’s arrest for allegedly trying to take her daughter’s one-month-old baby.

Bridget Nalweyiso, 22, went to Wantoni Police Station after a tense clash with her mother, Barbra Babirye, 45, whom she accused of refusing to give back the child. Nalweyiso claimed her mother was asserting ownership over the baby.

The situation began when Babirye accompanied Nalweyiso to Mukono General Hospital for the birth and later convinced her daughter to leave the newborn in her care for a short time. However, Babirye soon started telling people the child belonged to her and even tried to convince her new husband that she was the mother.

Nalweyiso expressed disbelief and hurt upon learning her mother was presenting the baby as her own, adding that Babirye had also sought money from her husband by falsely claiming the child was hers.

Local residents, who had seen Nalweyiso pregnant, were angered by Babirye’s behavior. Kimbowa Sonko, the chairperson of Basiima Kikooza cell, noted that the community recognized the baby as Nalweyiso’s, given her obvious pregnancy, and found Babirye’s claims astonishing.

After Nalweyiso reported the matter, Mukono Division Police arrested Babirye on suspicion of attempting to steal the child. The incident has stunned the community, prompting discussions about trust within families and the extremes some people will reach for selfish reasons. Authorities continue to investigate as the legal proceedings move forward.
