Why You pour Saliva On Your Pillow While Sleeping And What It Means According To Science

Drooling or pouring saliva on your pillow during sleep is a common phenomenon that happens when the body is in a deep, relaxed state. According to science, this usually occurs during the non-REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep stages when your muscles, including those controlling your mouth, are fully relaxed. This relaxation can cause the mouth to open slightly, allowing saliva to escape and drool onto the pillow.

One primary reason for excessive saliva production is the activation of the salivary glands, which continues even during sleep. If you’re sleeping on your side or stomach, gravity encourages saliva to pool and exit the mouth more easily. Additionally, conditions such as sinus infections, allergies, acid reflux, or sleep disorders like sleep apnea can increase the likelihood of drooling.

From a scientific standpoint, drooling isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It can indicate that you are getting quality sleep because your body is entering the deep sleep stages where restoration happens. However, excessive drooling may be a sign of underlying health issues, including dental problems, difficulty swallowing, or neurological disorders.

If drooling becomes frequent and bothersome, it’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional to rule out any medical conditions and find possible treatments.
