Who is Tamale Mirundi? Profile and bio of fallen political analyst, ex-Presidential press secretary

Kampala, (UG):- Renowned political commentator and veteran journalist Joseph Tamale Mirundi is no more. The outspoken analyst was Tuesday, August 13, pronounced dead at around 11pm after battling an illness for months.

Mirundi, who also formerly worked at State House for 12 good years as President Museveni’s private press secretary was at the time of his death the Deputy Spokesperson of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s PLU (Patriotic League of Uganda) in Buganda Region.

He had been placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in July after being admitted to Kisubi Hospital.

Who is Tamale Mirundi?

Born in 1964 in Rakai district, Tamale Mirundi was a veteran journalist, author, and political analyst known for his controversial commentary on various media platforms.

Mirundi, the son of Molly Namatovu and Yowana Mirundi, attended Lubiri Secondary School. Tamale Mirundi holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication and a Master’s degree in Communication.

In 2010, Mirundi came into the limelight during the 2010 protests when President Museveni’s government refused the Kabaka to visit his Bugerere county (Kayunga District). Despite being a Muganda by origin, Mirundi became popular for supporting the government’s stance at the expense of his tribe.

Mirundi was a part-time writer for the newspaper Munno before he became a professional journalist.

Throughout his illustrious journalism career, Mirundi worked with numerous media outlets, including Radio 4, NBS TV, Top Radio, Beat FM, ABS TV, Impact FM, STV Uganda, Pearl FM, and Metro FM.

However, he was in 2017, suspended from NBS TV’s One On One show for the use of abusive language.

After being barred from several top television and radio stations in the country for his controversial language, Mirundi was before being hospitalized working with STV’s political show Sharp Talk with Tamale Mirundi.

Mirundi predicted the downfall of Eric Sakwa and also predicted that the party People Power, Our Power under Bobi Wine would have more seats than any other opposition party after the 2021 elections, which became true.

In 2022, Tamale opened up an online newspaper where he publishes news and information named Kab News.

The former presidential press secretary had previous hospital admissions due to serious health concerns but in January this year, it was reported that he had been suffering from low blood pressure.

Mirundi authored several books, including: Bafunda ne Serwajjokwota, Who Keeps the President in Power?, Uganda’s Oil: Is It a Curse or Scramble?, What Divides the State and Religion, Killing a Medical Doctor to Save a Cobbler, From Crown Prince to Commoner.
