“What Would Happen If Besigye Died?” Gashumba Gives His Predictions On What Would Happen

The government has received a serious warning from Ugandan activist and PLU Vice Chairperson Central region Mr. Frank Gashumba on its treatment of Dr. Kizza Besigye, a well-known opposition politician and four-time presidential candidate. Gashumba warned that the consequences could rock the regime’s foundations if Besigye passed away while in detention.

Gashumba, who has been in and out of jail on multiple counts over the years, denounced the government’s handling of Besigye during a media appearance on Monday. Gashumba contended that rather than holding Besigye in jail under dubious circumstances, the state should put him under home arrest with 24-hour monitoring if it truly thinks he has committed crimes.

“Let’s not forget, this is the same government that managed to arrest him in Kenya and bring him back to Uganda. They have the resources and capacity to monitor him from home. Why keep him in prison under such conditions? If anything happens to Besigye in custody, the consequences for this government will be unprecedented,” Gashumba stated emphatically.

Gashumba’s comments coincide with growing worries about Besigye’s health. Concerns regarding the opposition leader’s health were raised when he recently showed up in court looking noticeably weak. Detaining Besigye in his current condition is not only cruel but also politically dangerous, therefore Gashumba emphasized that he must be released right away so that he can receive the medical attention he needs.

“Besigye looked unwell in court. This is someone who has dedicated his life to fighting for a better Uganda. Regardless of political differences, he deserves to be treated with dignity. The government should prioritize his health and allow him to access quality medical care outside prison,” Gashumba added.

The activist added that it is impossible to overlook Besigye’s legacy as a liberation fighter and resistance icon. Any injury to Besigye while he is in detention, according to Gashumba, would probably inspire his supporters and spark trouble both at home and abroad.
