A grim scene unfolded at a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) barracks after a soldier fatally shot himself following a heated altercation with a colleague over a romantic relationship.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday afternoon at a UPDF detachment in one of the barracks in Eastern Uganda. According to preliminary reports from military sources, the soldier, whose identity has been withheld pending family notification, got into a violent argument with a fellow officer over a woman believed to be romantically involved with both men.
Witnesses say the verbal confrontation quickly escalated, drawing attention from other soldiers within the detachment. Shortly after the altercation, the aggrieved soldier reportedly retreated to his quarters, where he turned his rifle on himself and pulled the trigger.
Military police rushed to the scene, but the soldier was pronounced dead moments later.
UPDF spokesperson Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye confirmed the incident, calling it an “unfortunate and deeply saddening loss within the force.” He added that investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the confrontation and the suicide.
“This is a painful reminder of the emotional toll that personal issues can have, even on those trained to remain resilient under pressure,” Brig. Kulayigye stated. “We urge our personnel to seek guidance, counseling, and conflict resolution support whenever facing challenges, especially those involving relationships.”
The soldier’s body was taken to the military hospital for a postmortem, and the army has reached out to his family with condolences and support.
Mental health experts and civil society organizations have since raised concern about increasing cases of violence and suicide within security forces, urging the UPDF to strengthen its psychological support and counseling units to help soldiers better manage emotional stress.
The incident has left fellow soldiers and residents near the barracks in shock, with many calling for calm and reflection. As the UPDF continues with its internal investigation, officials reiterated their call for discipline, emotional intelligence, and responsible conflict handling within the armed forces.
