The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 3 Infantry Division has acquired 204 acres of land in Kapelebyong, courtesy of the local community, to establish a new brigade headquarters.

This strategic move aims to bolster security, peace, and development in the Teso and Karamoja sub-regions.

Following months of community engagement and stakeholder meetings, the land was officially handed over at a joint stakeholders’ meeting in Aturai village, Kapelebyong District early this week.

Hon. Akorokin Francis, District Chairperson, said, “The community and customary land owners, represented by Mzee Oumo Joseph and Moka George William, hand over 204 acres to UPDF for a military brigade headquarters to protect and provide security to the people of Teso, Karamoja, and Uganda.”

Maj Gen Don William Nabasa, Commander of 3 Infantry Division, expressed his gratitude to the people of Kapelebyong for their kindness. He assured them that the Usalama One Brigade will bring associated infrastructure and amenities, benefiting community members with social services like healthcare, education, and water.

Maj Gen Nabasa encouraged continued collaboration with joint security forces to maintain peace and security, fostering economic growth.

The District Chairperson announced that funds have been allocated to upgrade road infrastructure and drill water sources, while the Ministry of Energy will extend power lines to the new establishment.

The Resident District Commissioner, Mr. Olinga Tom Otukol, thanked the landowners and community for their steadfastness, reaffirming the government’s commitment to fulfilling its 2021 manifesto and securing citizens’ futures.

Present at the ceremony were Brig Gen Wilberforce Sserunkuma, Deputy Commander of 3 Infantry Division; Brigade Commanders; District leaders; technical officials; Olaboro John Robert, Cabinet member and Security Mobiliser for Teso Cultural Union; and other dignitaries.
