Makerere University has been thrown into mourning following the death of one of its promising students, who lost his life in a tragic road accident at Bwaise Roundabout in Kampala on Tuesday evening. The deceased, identified as Muhammad Isa Ssengozi, was a second-year Cytotechnology student at the university’s College of Health Sciences. He reportedly sustained critical injuries after a commuter taxi collided with the boda boda motorcycle he was riding on. Despite being rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital, doctors pronounced him dead shortly after arrival.

University leaders described Ssengozi as a bright and committed student who showed exceptional passion for medical research and innovation. In a condolence message, Guild Minister for Students’ Affairs, Anthony Aniku, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, calling it a heartbreaking moment for the Makerere community.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our colleague and friend, Mr. Ssengozi Muhammad Isa. He was a brilliant mind whose dedication inspired many. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and classmates during this difficult time,” Aniku said.

Fellow students at the College of Health Sciences held a moment of silence in his memory, describing him as humble, focused, and deeply kind-hearted. Many took to social media to share emotional tributes and photos of him during class and laboratory sessions.

The university confirmed that his body was transported to Masaka District for burial on Wednesday, where family and friends gathered to pay their final respects.

Traffic police have since launched an investigation into the accident, which is the latest in a growing number of fatal road crashes across Kampala. Authorities say reckless driving and poor road discipline continue to endanger lives, particularly of young people who rely on motorcycles for daily transport.
