A tragic road accident unfolded on the Katosi-Nyenga Road early Thursday morning when a Gateway bus traveling from Jinja to Kampala lost control and veered off the road, leaving one person dead and multiple passengers injured.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus, which was carrying over 40 passengers, was speeding when it suddenly swerved to avoid a motorcycle. The driver, identified as 42-year-old James Okello, lost control of the vehicle, which then overturned into a roadside ditch. He died instantly at the scene.
Passengers described a horrifying scene of screams and chaos as the bus rolled several times before coming to a halt. Emergency response teams from Mukono District arrived within minutes to rescue trapped victims and transport the injured to Nyenga Mission Hospital and Kawolo General Hospital.
Authorities from Uganda Police have launched an investigation into the accident. Preliminary findings suggest that reckless driving and possible brake failure could have contributed to the crash.
“We are looking into all factors, including vehicle condition and speed, but the loss of life is tragic and preventable,” said ASP Patrick Onyango, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson.
At least 17 passengers sustained serious injuries, while others walked away with minor bruises. Some are in critical condition, and doctors are working around the clock to stabilize them.
The incident has once again raised alarm about road safety, especially along the Katosi-Nyenga stretch, which has become a hotspot for fatal crashes due to poor visibility, speeding, and lack of proper road signage.
Families of the affected passengers have been notified, and Gateway Bus Company has released a brief statement expressing condolences and promising full cooperation with investigations.
As Uganda continues to battle rising cases of road carnage, this latest tragedy adds to the growing call for stricter regulation of public transport, improved driver training, and investment in safer road infrastructure.
