Examination tension turned into scenes of shock and celebration after a Senior Four candidate went into labour while sitting her Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) paper and gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

The incident happened at a secondary school in Uganda, leaving invigilators and fellow candidates stunned as the student, identified by witnesses only as a 17-year-old candidate, suddenly began experiencing labour pains midway through the exam.

According to school officials, the girl had insisted on sitting for her exams despite being heavily pregnant. Moments after the paper began, she complained of sharp pains before collapsing beside her desk. Invigilators immediately halted the session and called for help.

“We were all shocked. She was strong enough to come for the paper, but after about 30 minutes, she started crying out in pain,” one classmate recounted.

Teachers and fellow students quickly rushed to assist her, while others contacted nearby health workers. With no time to waste, the student was helped to a nearby classroom where she successfully delivered a baby girl before medical personnel arrived.

She and the newborn were later taken to a nearby health centre, where both were reported to be in stable condition.

UNEB officials confirmed that arrangements would be made for the student to complete her remaining exams after recovery, assuring that “no candidate will be disadvantaged due to medical emergencies.”

The extraordinary event has since gone viral, drawing widespread praise for the young mother’s determination and courage. Many social media users described her as a symbol of strength and resilience, with messages of support pouring in from across the country.

“This young woman is a true fighter — sitting for national exams while carrying life inside her. She deserves all the respect,” one post read.

Education officials have applauded the school for its quick response and compassion, emphasizing the importance of supporting young mothers in continuing their education.

The newborn, welcomed with excitement by the school community, has been dubbed the “UNEB Baby” by students and teachers.

This heartwarming story stands as a powerful reminder of perseverance and hope — even in the face of life’s toughest challenges.
