NTUNGAMO, UGANDA — What began as a solemn farewell turned into a heartbreaking tragedy on Thursday when a bolt of lightning struck mourners gathered at a burial ceremony in Ntungamo District, killing one person and leaving seven others seriously injured.

According to local authorities, the incident occurred amid a sudden afternoon downpour as family members and villagers gathered to lay their loved one to rest. Without warning, lightning hit a group of mourners who were standing near the graveside, instantly claiming the life of one individual.

Witnesses said the strike caused panic and chaos as people scrambled for safety. The injured were quickly rushed to nearby health facilities, where they are currently receiving treatment. Medical personnel say some victims sustained severe burns and trauma.

Local leaders have expressed deep sorrow over the incident, urging communities to remain vigilant during the rainy season when lightning strikes are more frequent. They also called for the installation of lightning arrestors in homes, churches, and schools to reduce future risk.

Authorities are expected to conduct further assessments and provide support to the affected families.

This tragic event has left the Ntungamo community in shock, turning a moment meant for closure into one of profound grief and fear.
