The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced an ambitious nationwide recruitment exercise, aiming to enlist over 11,000 new candidates into the force. This major move is part of the UPDF’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its ranks and address emerging national security and development challenges.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, the recruitment exercise will run from July 15 to August 14, 2025, covering every region of the country. The initiative is expected to absorb 11,774 recruits, including general duty personnel, professionals, and specialized cadres such as medical staff, engineers, and IT experts.

Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye, the UPDF spokesperson, emphasized that the recruitment process will be free, transparent, and strictly merit-based. He urged aspiring candidates to beware of fraudsters and impersonators, warning that any form of bribery or favoritism will not be tolerated.

“The UPDF is looking for patriotic, disciplined, and physically fit Ugandans who are ready to serve their country with loyalty and professionalism,” Brig. Kulayigye said during a press briefing.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Ugandan citizenship with a valid National ID

  • Age between 18 and 25 for general recruits; up to 30 for professionals

  • Minimum education of S.4 (UCE) for regular recruits; relevant academic credentials for specialists

  • Physically fit and medically sound

  • No criminal record

Recruitment Centers:
Each district will host designated recruitment centers, and applicants are advised to report only to centers within their home districts. The Ministry also noted that special arrangements have been made to ensure gender equity and regional balance.

The UPDF says this recruitment aligns with its long-term human resource development strategy and the need to support peacekeeping, national infrastructure development, and disaster response operations.

Analysts view the recruitment as both a job creation opportunity for Uganda’s youth and a critical step in modernizing the country’s defense sector.

For updates and the full recruitment schedule, applicants are encouraged to visit the official Ministry of Defence website or check announcements from their respective local government offices.
