Police in Kawempe Division have opened investigations into the death of a suspected boda boda thief who was allegedly beaten by a mob of mechanics in an incident of mob justice.
According to preliminary police reports, the incident occurred on Friday afternoon in the Bwaise area, which hosts several motorcycle and vehicle repair workshops. The deceased is suspected to have stolen a boda boda motorcycle from a nearby stage before attempting to flee.
Witnesses told police that the suspect was chased by boda boda riders and members of the public before being cornered near the garages. A group of mechanics allegedly attacked him before police could intervene.
Officers from Kawempe Police Station later arrived at the scene and found the suspect critically injured. He was rushed to a nearby health facility, where he was pronounced dead. His body was subsequently taken to the City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed the incident and condemned the act of mob justice, reminding the public that taking the law into their own hands is a criminal offense.
“While motorcycle theft remains a serious concern, mob justice is illegal. Suspects should be arrested and handed over to police for proper investigation and prosecution,” the spokesperson said.
Police say they are recording statements from witnesses and working to identify individuals involved in the attack. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over mob justice in Kawempe Division, particularly in areas affected by frequent cases of boda boda theft.
