Student Killed in Mityana as Assailants Dig Into Shop

Police in Mityana District are investigating the killing of a 14-year-old Senior One student during a burglary at his brother’s shop in Busimbi Gombolola Cell, Mityana Municipality.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night and claimed the life of Nathan Kakooza, a student at Mityana Town Secondary School. The assailants reportedly accessed the shop by digging a hole through its wall. They stole two sacks of rice and sugar before fleeing the scene.

Kakooza had been sleeping in the shop to assist his elder brother, David Ssekyanzi, during the busy festive season. Ssekyanzi noted that this was the third burglary at his shop in six months, with no arrests made so far.

A police sniffer dog was deployed to the crime scene but had not yielded any leads by Wednesday. Local leaders, including Mityana Central Division Mayor Fred Wotonava, called for heightened security measures in the area, urging police to increase patrols during the festive season to curb such incidents.

Wamala Regional Police indicated that an official statement on the matter was forthcoming. According to the 2023 police crime report, approximately 25 lives are lost daily in Uganda due to murder or road crashes.
