Police in Fort Portal city, western Uganda, are investigating the death of a 17-year-old student from St. Leo’s College, Kyegobe, who is suspected to have committed suicide by hanging.

The deceased has been identified as Douglas Ahurra, a senior three student. According to a statement from Rwenzori West Police spokesperson Vincent Twesige, Ahurra returned from church at around 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening.

He then reportedly untied a rope from a cow and told his mother he was going to collect firewood from a nearby valley.

Minutes later, Ahurra was found hanging from a tree in a neighbour’s garden. Police have recorded statements from witnesses and opened an inquiry into the incident.
