The Ministry of Works and Transport has given an update on the ongoing land acquisition for the Right of Way for the Standard Gauge Railway.

Speaking to Project Affected Persons in the Wanyange Lake Area of Jinja City on Monday, 5th August, 2024, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Mr. Bageya revealed that the overall compensation is estimated at Shs610.92Bn.

He says that out of the Shs610.92Bn, Shs292.36Bn for 1,963 acres have been approved by government from Tororo to Mayuge and parts of Jinja and Buikwe.

“As at April this year, 1,522.4 acres, approximately 134Km out of the 230km mainline has been acquired,” he says.

A total of 67 PAPs in this area are to be compensated by both URC and SGR since they fall in a shared corridor area.

The meeting was held to harmonize issues that have emerged over the compensation of the unique community that falls between the two Railway corridors and are to be compensated separately by URC for their land and by SGR for developments on the land.

The PS advised that the two Railway bodies streamline the issues being raised by the PAPs and prioritize their compensation to enable the smooth flow of both the rehabilitation of the MGR and the impending construction of the SGR.
