A security guard was shot dead on Thursday night following a robbery at A&B Supermarket near the Namugongo Catholic Shrine. The robbery, which lasted just under two minutes, was carried out by two armed assailants wielding guns and machetes. According to the supermarket’s owner, Brian Kayongo, the robbers stormed the premises, held staff at gunpoint, and made off with money from the counter and safe.
Kayongo said the unnamed private security guard from a nearby bar tried to pursue them, but they shot him on the spot and took his gun.
Area chairman Michael Ssendawula, who was among the first responders, said residents quickly alerted the Kira Division Police Commander, who arrived at the scene with his team shortly after the robbers had fled.“We commend the police for the swift response, but unfortunately, the thugs had already escaped. We urge security agencies to do everything possible to track them down,” Ssendawula said.
The Namugongo robbery occurred just a day after another violent incident in Kitintale, where a suspected robber was shot dead during an attempted raid on a mobile money outlet, raising fresh concerns about a surge in urban armed robberies.
