The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has taken a significant step in supporting African club football by providing financial assistance to clubs participating in the preliminary stages of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

For the first time, clubs in these early rounds will receive USD 50,000 each, a substantial boost that will help alleviate the financial strain of travel and logistical costs, which have long been a concern for many clubs.

This initiative is part of CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe’s broader commitment to improving African club competitions and ensuring that more teams benefit financially, even before reaching the group stages.

Previously, only teams that advanced to the group stages were eligible for prize money.

This new development is expected to encourage more clubs to participate in continental competitions, ultimately raising the standard of football across the continent.

In recent years, CAF has significantly increased its investment in African club football, with winners of the CAF Champions League now receiving USD 4 million and winners of the CAF Confederation Cup taking home USD 2 million.

This continued financial support reflects CAF’s dedication to fostering growth and competitiveness in African football, ensuring that clubs at all levels have the resources to succeed on the continental stage.
