Protest Singer Shot Dead While Filming in Goma, DR Congo

Delphin Katembo Vinywasiki, widely recognized as Delcat Idengo, was found dead in Goma, a conflict-stricken town in the Democratic Republic of Congo, on Thursday.

His body, discovered partially covered in blood, is reported to have shown signs of a violent death, with unconfirmed sources indicating that he may have been shot while filming a music video. Idengo was an influential musician known for his critical songs that addressed both the Congolese government and rebel forces. His recent work, particularly the track “Bunduki” (Swahili for “weapon”), condemns the ongoing rebel occupation in Goma.

This region of the DRC has experienced persistent violence, where various armed groups and the national army vie for control over its mineral-rich resources. According to United Nations reports, this conflict has led to the displacement of around 700,000 people and resulted in approximately 2,900 deaths. Government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya condemns Idengo’s killing as an “abominable act,” attributing responsibility to the M23 rebel group.

Conversely, the M23 accuses government-aligned forces of the assassination and calls for their disarmament, underscoring the rising tensions in the region. The rebels are reportedly advancing toward Bukavu despite ongoing regional peace efforts. The circumstances surrounding Idengo’s death have ignited protests in his hometown of Beni, where citizens are demanding justice.

The Congolese Ministry of Arts and Culture characterizes the incident as an “assassination” and lauds Idengo for articulating the aspirations of a generation through his music. Idengo had previously encountered legal troubles, having faced charges for inciting violence against UN peacekeepers and criticizing President Félix Tshisekedi. In 2021, he was sentenced to a ten-year prison term but was later acquitted. His escape from prison, coinciding with the M23’s seizure of Goma, left him awaiting trial for past accusations.

Prominent opposition leaders have expressed their condolences and condemned the musician’s murder. Martin Fayulu, who finished third in the 2023 general election, refers to Idengo as a patriot committed to national unity and calls for an end to the war. Similarly, Moïse Katumbi, another opposition figure, urges the swift identification and punishment of those responsible for the killing.
