A police dog has tracked down and helped arrest two suspects believed to be behind a machete attack in Mafubira, Jinja City. Wilber Mayanja, a boda boda rider, and Murushid Wasswa, a welder, have been apprehended and are being held at Nalufenya Police Station. According to James Mubi, the Kiira region Police spokesperson, the arrests followed a brutal attack in the early hours of July 19 at Kyamagwa Cell in Mafubira, Jinja City.

“Three men armed with machetes, riding a motorcycle without license plates, assaulted Aramanzan Lutalo, 19, Tenywa Muzamiru, and Stephen Kalulu, 60, inflicting severe injuries,” Mubi stated. The injured victims were quickly transported to GlenZ Dignity Hospital in Mafubira and St. Nick Clinic in Mpumudde. Sadly, Lutalo succumbed to his injuries while in the hospital.

Tenywa suffered serious head injuries and a ruptured left eye, necessitating an emergency surgery referral to Jinja Main Hospital. Meanwhile, Stephen Kalulu is reportedly recovering and out of immediate danger.

Eyewitnesses, who wished to remain anonymous, reported seeing the attackers use machetes on the victims before fleeing on their unregistered motorcycle. Mubi mentioned that the Kiira regional police command promptly initiated prosecution-guided investigations and deployed a police sniffer dog at the crime scene. The dog led investigators to two rented rooms in Mafubira, occupied by Wilber Mayanja and Murushid Wasswa.

The owner of these rented rooms was also questioned. A search of the rooms revealed several incriminating items, including machetes, a hammer, marijuana, and scissors hidden inside jackets. Additionally, a motorcycle with the registration number UED 157N was seized and is currently undergoing verification by the Uganda Revenue Authority to confirm ownership.

The suspects reportedly stole mobile phones and an unspecified amount of money from the victims. Mubi assured that security measures in Jinja have been intensified, with joint security patrols and community awareness programs actively being conducted.
