“Police Crackdown on Shisha Smoking in Gulu: Community Divided Over Ban”

The Police in Gulu City’s Central Business Division have launched a disruptive operation targeting shisha smoking points within the city.

According to Aswa West Police spokesperson David Ongom Mudong, the operation, which is intelligence-led, has already resulted in the confiscation of over 20 shisha pots and their accessories from popular spots such as Pass Word and Buganda Pub.

Mudong stated that the crackdown is aimed at controlling the supply of tobacco and its products to the population.

He emphasized that the smoking of shisha is illegal, and the operation is focused on proprietors and managers of venues facilitating the activity.

“No one goes to such scenes without the managers encouraging the smoking of such substances,” he noted.

Shisha, as defined by the British Heart Foundation, involves smoking heated tobacco, with the smoke bubbling through water before being inhaled through a hose-like pipe.

In Gulu City, social venues such as bars, clubs, and hotels often have designated shisha smoking points.

Mudong warned that the operation would be continuous, urging dealers to cease promoting the illegal practice.

“They are going to be arrested, prosecuted, and their business licenses revoked,” he cautioned. Confiscated items are currently held at Gulu Central Police Station pending further action.

The police have reiterated their commitment to enforcing the law and discouraging practices deemed harmful to public health and safety.
