PM Nabbanja Slams Ssenyonyi: Is It In Order for LOP to Come Here Every Time to Tarnish Govt?

Today’s exchange between Leader of Opposition (LOP) Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi and Prime Minister Hon. Robinah Nabbanja has sparked concerns over the rule of law, government actions, and political accountability in Uganda.

The debate centered around the conduct of government security forces during a raid on the National Unity Platform (NUP) headquarters and the broader issue of following legal procedures in such operations.

Hon. Ssenyonyi called on both the Speaker and the government to adhere to the law in all actions, especially when conducting searches on private property.

He pointed out a concerning incident where NUP’s headquarters was raided by various security outfits. According to the LOP, the security personnel forcibly entered the premises, chased away party officials, broke down doors, and confiscated laptops, money, and other valuables.

Ssenyonyi acknowledged the government’s right to conduct searches but stressed that such actions must be carried out lawfully. “You have a right to search anywhere, including my office,” he said. However, he pointed out that clear legal requirements were overlooked in this instance.

He argued that the security personnel should have arrived with a search warrant and allowed party representatives to be present during the search. “We have keys to our offices; why break the door?” he questioned, emphasizing the need to follow basic legal procedures to prevent property damage and theft.

The LOP expressed frustration that the government had acted outside of the law, causing unnecessary destruction and loss. He suggested that had the authorities followed proper protocol and presented a search warrant, the situation would have been entirely different.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja responded by dismissing the LOP’s concerns, stating that the government has always acted in the best interest of Ugandans.

She argued that Parliament often finds itself embroiled in unfounded allegations, which she believes are aimed at tarnishing the government’s image. “This government has protected Ugandans, and that’s why everyone, including investors, is proud,” Nabbanja said.

Nabbanja questioned whether it was appropriate for him to continuously accuse the government without providing concrete evidence.

She accused the opposition of attempting to undermine the government’s efforts, particularly in her presence. “Is it in order for the LOP to tarnish government in my presence?” she asked.
