Uganda – Authorities in Busoga North Region have launched a thorough investigation into a suspected food poisoning incident that claimed the life of a 10-year-old pupil and left eight others hospitalized in Luuka District.

Preliminary reports indicate that the incident occurred between November 14 and 15, 2025, at Telik Junior School. A Primary Two pupil allegedly shared food brought from home with classmates, after which several children began suffering from severe vomiting and diarrhoea. Teachers quickly rushed the affected pupils to Kiyunga Health Centre IV for emergency medical attention.

One of the pupils, Namugogo Sharifah, aged 10, tragically passed away on November 15. Her body was taken to Kiyunga Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem to determine the exact cause of death, while the eight other children remain under medical care.

School Officials Detained as Investigation Continues

Police have detained two individuals associated with the school’s management to assist with the ongoing inquiry. Authorities hope their testimonies will help clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident and establish accountability.

Busoga North Regional Police Spokesperson SSP Samson Lubega stated that specialized teams, including Scene of Crime Officers and medical experts, are leading a detailed investigation.

“We urge the public to remain calm as our experts work to determine what substances may have caused the poisoning and how the incident occurred,” Lubega said.

Investigators have not yet confirmed whether the food contained toxic substances or if the poisoning was accidental. Police continue to collect samples and interview witnesses, school staff, and parents.

Further information is expected once medical and forensic analyses are complete.
