NLC president reportedly freed following threats to release him before midnight

According to a Vanguard report, the NLC president was released on bail, approximately an hour before midnight.

The NLC president who was slated to attend the Trade Union Congress conference in London on Monday, was arrested on his way to his flight.

Shortly after, the NLC vowed to initiate a nationwide protest if he is not released by midnight. Alongside his release, the NLC also insisted that the recent fuel hike in Nigeria be reversed, the new minimum wage be implemented immediately, and the new electric tariff reversed.

“We wish to categorically state that Comrade Ajaero has been detained without any legal warrant or formal instrument. Joe Ajaero is not a fugitive,” the NLC had said in a statement.

“His detention is therefore a brazen act of lawlessness and intimidation as he has not been declared wanted by any law enforcement body. His detention is a brazen act of intimidation and completely unjustified under the laws of our nation,” the statement continued.

The NLC president last week accepted a police request to discuss suspicions of “criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime”. He left the police headquarters the same day after issuing a statement.

Days after, another letter from the police demanded that Ajaero report for further questioning. This time, he was requested to accompany the NLC’s Secretary General, Emmanuel Ugboaja.
