The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has introduced a WhatsApp service to help Ugandans check the status of their National ID applications and know where to pick up their cards.

According to NIRA, out of more than 7 million new printed National ID cards in Uganda, only 1.5 million have so far been picked up by applicants, leaving over 5.5 million cards still pending collection in district offices.

“While we continue printing and dispatching cards, we encourage applicants to visit respective district offices to pick their cards,” the statement reads.

New WhatsApp Service for Status Updates

NIRA is improving its communication and feedback platforms following public concerns about delays and limited updates. The new WhatsApp line  0766 501071 ,  allows applicants to send their application ID and receive real-time updates on their ID’s readiness and collection location.

“Based on feedback gathered, we’re improving our feedback platforms to give precise notice of application updates, including readiness and pickup places,” NIRA said.

Offices Open Nationwide

The authority emphasized that its offices are operational across all districts, making it easier for applicants to collect their National IDs without delay. Printing and dispatching of additional cards is ongoing.

Other Ways to Check Status, Applicants can also call NIRA’s toll-free line 0800 211 700 for inquiries.
