General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, has issued a directive requiring all female Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officers to wear skirts instead of trousers during parades.
The announcement was made through a message on his official X account, where he stated,
“All female comrades in the UPDF shall from now on march in skirts. Trousers are for men not for women. Anyone who forces our sisters to put on trousers on parade again will have a very bad day.”
The directive has drawn mixed responses. Some members of the public and military say the change supports cultural values and uniform distinction. Others have expressed concern, saying it may reinforce stereotypes and affect the morale of female personnel.
Questions have also been raised about whether the decision was discussed within the military leadership or if it reflects international military practice on gender equality.
It is not yet clear when the order will take effect or whether official changes to the dress code have been made.
