MP proposes direct election for Leader of Opposition

Posted on

“The current system for appointing the Leader of the Opposition can sometimes appear undemocratic,” MP Lumu stated. “By allowing all opposition MPs to vote for their leader, we can ensure that this crucial position is more representative of the opposition.”

The bill was tabled during the first regional parliamentary sitting held in Gulu City and could signal a notable shift from the existing system. If enacted, it would grant opposition MPs greater autonomy in choosing their leader, potentially leading to a more representative and accountable opposition.

The Gulu regional parliamentary sitting, which commenced on August 28, 2024, marks the first of four regional sittings scheduled for this financial year.
