The Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, has announced the new regulations aimed at improving safety and restoring discipline on Ugandan roads.

The update announcement was made today, Thursday, 28th November, 2024.

A key reform requires boda-boda riders in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area to wear uniform reflector jackets containing identifiable details

The jackets will include a photo, name and contacts of the rider with a QR code, thé jackets will also be color of coded according to the various divisions.

These details will also sync with the details of the motorcycle being ridden, these include the registered number plate.

The Colour code examples include; Pink-Kampala Central, Dark blue –Makindye, and Forest Green for Nakawa.

All Motorcycle sales are to include 2 Standard Helmets with one being for the rider and the other for a passenger.

This has been agreed upon during a consultative meeting with motorcycle assembling companies, dealers and financiers. This regulation will ensure that no motorbike leaves the assembly plant without 2 standard helmets.

Regulations for the standardization of helmets are already in place and these must be strictly adhered to for any motorcycle to get registered.

This is just one of the measures being put in place to streamline the boda-boda industry and return sanity to Ugandan roads.

Other regulations include driving permits for all operators made easier by the reduction of the Driving Permit fee to Shs100,000 per year.

However, before issuance of a Driving Permit, the boda boda rider must have got training from a reputable Driving School.
