On Friday morning, 2nd August 2024, the administration and managers of Nyondo Secondary School honored Maswere Derrick, who excelled in his PCM subjects with 20 points, earning him admission to Makerere University for a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.

Dismas Wandulu, the Head Teacher praised Maswere as the most disciplined student, adding that excellence has been a hallmark of his academic journey, noting that he was also the top Uganda Certificate of Education candidate in 2020. He mentioned that Maswere was the best overall student in the Bugisu sub-region.

Wandulu addressing the students encouraged them to be determined, disciplined, and respectful to their teachers. He credited the supportive school environment and availability of reading materials for his success.

Nasimolo Paul, Derick’s father, expressed his gratitude to the school for its support, especially during economic hardships. Nasimolo, a charcoal burner and vendor in Mbale district, thanked the government for the scholarship, stating he couldn’t afford the tuition at Makerere University.

Peter Buyela, the chairman of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA), handed over an envelope containing 500,000 UGX and other gifts to Maswere. He stated that this contribution would support Maswere’s upkeep and serve as motivation for other students to study harder and excel.

Buyela emphasized that the tradition of recognizing top students would continue annually and encouraged parents to entrust more students to their care.

In the 2023 UACE examinations, Nyondo Secondary School registered 87 candidates, all of whom passed and secured admission to various universities and higher institutions of learning.
