MBALE CITY
Mbale Resident City Commissioner, Nasike Asumin has ordered the Mbale Central Market management to stop charging vendors entry fee taxes terming them as illegal.
Previously, the Mbale Central Market had introduced the tax to generate additional revenue for the daily running of the market like paying cleaners and security.
This was during a meeting with stakeholders and city technical teams hosted by officials from RDC/RCC Secretariat office of the President on Wednesday, 28 August 2024, in Mbale city for a spot check on the service delivery and government program implementations.
However, Yusuf Nsubuga, the general secretary of Mbale central market accused the Mbale City Council of abandoning its responsibility, saying the money which has been collected by council has never served any purpose in the market.
“We are here suffering with the council, the market pays tax to the council every month but the council has abandoned market issues, we have 10,313 vendors and this market is generating 2 tones of garbage every day, but since council has abandoned us, we resorted to creating another tax called entry fee, this is what we have been using for the daily running of the market,” Nsubuga argued.
Nasike however insisted that they have resolved that all payments in the central market should be paid on an account that is known by government to avoid receipts that could lead to forgeries.
The team visited several places including Mbale Central market, Nakaloke Town Council road project of 2Bn and a House construction which is taking place on top of the sewer line and under the power line near KCB Bank Uganda on market street
