Police are pursuing a suspect accused of killing his cousin during a heated row over a football match between Manchester United and Chelsea on Saturday, September 20, 2025, in Gitwamba village.

The victim has been identified as Stephen Njoroge, while the suspect is his cousin, James Mbugua. According to family members, the two were watching the English Premier League clash together when a disagreement spiraled out of control. Witnesses say James allegedly drew a knife and stabbed Stephen, leaving him mortally wounded.

Relatives expressed disbelief, describing the cousins as inseparable and often seen enjoying football together. “They never had any history of quarrels, which makes Stephen’s death even more painful for us to comprehend,” one uncle said.

Another family member suggested that alcohol may have fueled tempers, though police have not confirmed this detail.

After the incident, the suspect fled, prompting police to launch a manhunt and open a murder investigation. Officers say they are working to piece together the exact sequence of events that led to the fatal attack.

Residents of Gitwamba village have voiced shock, condemning the killing and urging calm as investigations continue. Many described the violence as unprecedented in their community, while Kenyans online have also reacted with outrage, calling for football rivalries to remain friendly and not turn deadly.

Confirming the case, local police said a file has been opened and additional charges may follow once investigations are complete.

Meanwhile, Stephen’s family is struggling with grief. Relatives described him as a caring young man whose sudden loss has left them shattered. “We are heartbroken and in pain. We pray justice is served,” his uncle added.
