Man Admitted to Hospital After 8-Hour Erection Caused by Roadside Herbal Mixture

A young man has been admitted to hospital after reportedly developing a painful erection that lasted about eight hours following the consumption of a roadside herbal sexual enhancement product sold by an informal vendor.

According to a report by Daily Nation, the man experienced serious medical complications shortly after taking the unregulated herbal mixture, which is commonly marketed along busy roads as a remedy for improving sexual performance.

Medical personnel reportedly diagnosed the condition as priapism, a medical emergency in which an erection persists for an extended period, often accompanied by severe pain. The condition occurs when blood becomes trapped in the penile tissue and can cause permanent damage if treatment is delayed.

Health professionals have warned that unregulated herbal products pose significant risks because their ingredients, strength and possible side effects may not be properly established. Consumers may unknowingly expose themselves to harmful substances when using products that have not undergone appropriate safety assessments.

Doctors emphasise that an erection lasting more than four hours requires immediate medical attention. Prompt treatment is essential to reduce the risk of irreversible tissue damage and other long-term complications.

The Pharmacy and Poisons Board has repeatedly warned the public about the dangers of using unapproved herbal sexual enhancement products, noting that such remedies may not meet the required safety and quality standards.

Despite these concerns, roadside herbal preparations remain popular because they are relatively affordable and readily available. However, medical experts caution that easy access should not be mistaken for safety.

The incident has renewed calls for stronger enforcement against the sale of unauthorised herbal products and increased public education about the potential dangers of consuming remedies with unknown ingredients.

Authorities are also facing renewed pressure to strengthen the monitoring of informal vendors and ensure that products marketed for sexual enhancement meet the necessary regulatory requirements.
