General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Yoweri Museveni, has criticised Winnie Byanyima, bringing attention to her past relationship with the president.
In a post on his X account, Muhoozi claimed, “There was NOTHING normal about your relationship with my father. You found a happy home and tried to wreck it. You’re a DISASTER of a woman!”
Muhoozi also alleged that Byanyima did not leave the relationship willingly, saying, “Mzee kicked you out of the house in December of 1986, dragged you to the car while you were crying, and sent you to your parents.”
The controversy arose after Winnie Byanyima, the wife of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, discussed the topic during an appearance on “The Next Big Talk,’ hosted by Canary Mugume.
Byanyima acknowledged her past relationship with Museveni but dismissed its relevance in the current political context. “Yes, I did have a relationship with President Museveni a long time ago, but it holds no relevance to today’s conversations, especially not regarding Besigye’s detention,” she stated.
She also reflected on her longstanding connection with Museveni, saying, “I’ve known him since I was about three years old. He used to visit our home regularly.”
The issue resurfaced after a tweet from journalist Andrew Mwenda, which renewed public interest in Byanyima’s past. However, Byanyima dismissed suggestions that the relationship was significant or relevant to her current role.
“It was a normal relationship that ended a long time ago. This part of my life is insignificant and should not be dragged into political debates,” she said.
She also rejected claims that the relationship made her uncomfortable, saying, “Some think this makes me uneasy. They couldn’t be more wrong.”
