The death toll in Sunday’s Jinja City taxi fire has risen to three, following the passing away of another victim at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital.Ms Angella Nafuna succumbed to deep wounds she sustained from the horrific inferno last night, the Nile Post has been told.Kiira Region Police spokesperson James Mubi sai Police is yet to get names of two people who were burnt beyond recognition on the spot.
“The death toll stands at three people, including the two people who died on the spot, and Angella Nafuna who died at the Jinja Hospital,” Mubi said.
He revealed that Police has embarked on investigations to ascertain the cause of this fire accident.”We are yet to find out what caused this accident but our team is on ground to assess all possible means,” he said.”We have leanrt that today the bomb squad assessed the scene of crime to beef up the Jinja investigators.The scene of this accident remains cordoned off amidst tight security by Police.
Kiira Region Police Commander Charles Nsaba also visited the scene this morning.The Sunday incident happened at 4:30pm when a Mbale-bound commuter taxi caught fire at Clive East Road a few metres from Jinja Taxi Park.
Police and community members managed to extinguish the fire but the damage was already huge.Scores sustained serious injuries and were admitted at Jinja regional referral hospital where they are receiving treatment.
By press time Jinja Hospital management was noncommittal to make a statement on the number of people admitted at their facility citing ethical grounds of not revealing identities of their clients with out their consent.
