The death toll from the Kigoogwa Fuel Tanker fire has risen to 28 after two more victims died at Kirudu Hospital.
This was revealed by the Police Spokesperson, ACP Rusooke Kituma in an X message today 29th, October, 2024 saying their remains have been released to their families for burial.
Rusooke had on Monday, 28th October, updated the death toll to 26 with 22 bodies claimed by relatives. This number has now risen to 28 after two more died at Kiruddu Hospital.
Assistant Inspector General of Police Dr. Moses Byaruhanga had before Monday noted that a total of 24 bodies, males (18) and females (6) had been handled including those who died at Kigogwa, Kiruddu and Bombo Hospitals.
Due to severe burns, the bodies were unrecognizable therefore had to be identified through a DNA process.
The accident occurred at around 3:00 pm on 22nd October, 2024 in Kigoogwa Town when a fuel tank registration number UAM 292Q, from Kampala heading to Gulu overturned and caught fire in Kigoogwa town.
Its reported that after the fuel tank overturned and several people rushed to siphon fuel before it caught fire killing 11 persons on the spot.
Fire also spread to several shops and destroyed merchandise worth millions from nine shops.
