King Oyo Warns Against Evicting Squatters on Kingdom Land

The King of Tooro Kingdom Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV has assured squatters on the Kingdom land of protection.

Speaking at the 29th coronation anniversary on Thursday at his Palace in Fort Portal, King Oyo said that his subjects should not be evicted from the Kingdom land.

According to King Oyo, some politicians in the Kingdom have made it a habit to de-campaign the Kingdom by peddling lies that the kingdom plans to evict them.

He added that they are working with the Kingdom’s land department to issue leases to the squatters.

” I encourage the people on Kingdom land to get a lease from the kingdom legally. The land is yours and for the Kingdom,” Oyo said.

King Oyo also expressed concern at the rate of HIV/AIDS prevalence in the kingdom saying that the figures are worrying. According to the Uganda Aids Commission, Fort Portal City has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in the country at 14.1 percent.

The King said that as much as several interventions have been done to curb the spread of the disease, the highest figures in his kingdom are shaming.

King Oyo also used the occasion to ask the government to support the people of Ntoroko who were hit by floods last month.

Due to Lake Albert’s rising water levels, the district often experiences floods that start from Kanara Sub County. The floods continue to submerge their farms, and cattle leaving the district’s major economic activity threatened.
