Kenzo promises copyright law before Christmas

Eddy Kenzo has vowed to deliver the long-awaited copyright amendment law before the close of this year, thanks to his rejuvenated ties with the government and President Yoweri Museveni.

The Copyright and Neighboring Rights Amendment Bill which guarantees better rewards for artists for their works was drafted by the Mawokota North MP Hilary Kiyaga aka Dr Hilderman back in 2022.

It however suffered setbacks and has since been shelved amid disagreements with the executives.

Following his appointment by President Yoweri Museveni as the presidential advisor on creatives, Kenzo says there is now real hope for the bill to be passed.

He told fellow musicians last night that the president has directed deliberations to carry on between the artists and the executive to iron out the persisting points of contention in the bill.

The president has given us a couple of weeks and we are going back to meet him, to discuss and iron out the remaining sticky issues. We shall discuss this at State House,” he said.

The copyright law had failed for years because people were only quarrelling. Now we have come up with a different approach to deliberations and it is working.”

Meanwhile, Kenzo defended his decision to openly support President Yoweri Museveni and the NRM government stressing that it is his right.

The fact is, there is no one else we can engage to get better, but the government which runs this country,” he stressed.

They are the ones who make policies. If you say we should not go there, you don’t like us.”

“If I wake up and say I support Museveni, there is no wrong in that you are also allowed to support whoever you want. There is a law that allows be to have a choice especially now that he has decided to pick us the poor people from the ground, Now I like him even more,” he added.
