Police in Kamuli District have arrested a man for allegedly assaulting and killing a 15-year-old pupil over sugarcane.The suspect, Jonan Balisanyuka, is accused of attacking Mathias Bakaki, a pupil at Five Star Nursery and Primary School Luzinga, leading to his death.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on March 19, 2025, at around 5pm in Kibeto-Buyima Zone, Luzinga Parish, Wankoole Sub-county.Bakaki and his friends were returning home from school when they came across a heap of sugarcane under Balisanyuka’s watch. The children allegedly attempted to take some, prompting the suspect to chase them away.
However, Bakaki reportedly did not flee, leading to a confrontation.
Balisanyuka is accused of physically assaulting the pupil, causing him to collapse unconscious. He was rushed to a nearby clinic but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Busoga North Region Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha confirmed the arrest, stating that investigations are ongoing to establish the full details of the incident.
Authorities have urged the public to seek peaceful and lawful means of resolving disputes instead of resorting to violence.
Bakaki’s tragic death has sparked outrage, with community members demanding justice. Police have assured the public that the suspect will be charged accordingly once investigations are concluded.
