KAMPALA: Notorious Car Thief Re-Arrested Over Same Crime 4 Months after Getting Bail

A notorious robber belonging to a racket that steals vehicles from Kampala and selling them in DRC has been re-arrested a few months after he was granted court bail over the same crimes.

 

Matovu Kenny, 30 years old, Transport Manager from Aliwala village, Aluu County, Congo, according to Police Spokesperson, ACP Rusooke’s statement dated 11th November, 2024 has arrested trying to steal a car by deceit.

 

He says Matovu attempted to ‘hire’ a vehicle from an undisclosed owner to attend a function but with the intention of selling it in DRC but since he was in police radar, he was caught in the act.

 

In June, police in Kajjansi apprehended Matovu and four others including, Gumisiriza Ismail, 35 years old, self-employed, residing in Okawanda Namere, Wakiso District, Musimenta Ruth, also known as Jovan, 22 years old, self-employed, living in Kireka Bliz, Wakiso District, Matovu Frank, 31 years old, a driver from Katooke B Zone, Nansana, Wakiso District, and Mwebeza Ivan, 40 years old, a driver residing in Katooke A Zone, Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District over car theft.

 

On May 20, 2024, around 9:00 PM in Seguku, Makindye-Ssabago Municipality, Wakiso District, they hired a vehicle to allegedly travel to Masindi for an event.

 

Instead of attending the function, they took the vehicle and sold it in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Police were alerted and quickly took action.

 

The five suspects were arrested and detained at Nateete Police Station. They later appeared in court and were remanded but subsequently received bail.

“Currently, our teams in Wakiso have re-arrested Matovu Kenny on similar charges of vehicle theft using deceptive hiring tactics to evade detection,” says Rusoke adding that Matovu has confessed to stealing over four vehicles for sale in Congo.
